Vietnam to import breeder hogs from Thailand

Vietnam plans to import 20,000 head of breeding stock from Thailand in 2020.

The first batch of 250 breeders has already been shipped to Vietnam via Laos. Land transportation costs up to 2,700 baht/head. Vietnam is likely to order up to 110,000 head of breeding stock this year to rebuild its hog population, the 2nd largest in Asia.

Prices of imported breeders are around 13-15 million VND. Also, piglets are selling for around 2.8-3 million VND.

Vietnam’s hog industry was decimated by the outbreak of African swine fever. Some six million hogs or 20% of the total hog population were culled.
